Boiling the Frog

I recently broke a fast. The fast was from social media. In the weeks leading up to the fast, I realized the daily inner peace I normally have was being attacked and replaced by toxic, hellish substances. I eventually had to ask myself "Is this worth it?" After deciding, no, it wasn't worth it, I announced my fast on my social media platform of choice, and said "See you later" to my friends and family.

I really had no idea how long this fast would last. After considering the impacts, I decided to delete my account. So I scheduled it for deletion, then about 10 days or so went by, and I had to go back into my account to contact some folks about an upcoming wedding, and remind them that they hadn't yet responded to their invitations. This naturally reset my "deletion timer" for another two weeks. Bottom line, my account is still active.

As it turns out, it really doesn't matter whether my account is active or not. I discovered something valuable in my time away from social media, and that is this...there is life outside of social media. Shocking, I know. Not only is there life, there is good life. Fulfilling life. Not the kind of life where a daily dose of toxic vitriol gets loaded into the syringe and mainlined directly to my mind from every lame brain out there.

I realized I was the frog in the proverbial pot of water--(or is it a myth or a fable?), and that I was slowly boiling to death. Thankfully I hopped out.

So what's next? I've decided for the time being to keep my social media platform of choice account active. However, I am going to ruthlessly prune the list of people I "follow". If you're toxic, you're gone. But rest assured, spewer of hate, I am not abandoning you. I'm promoting you to where I should have placed you in the first place--on my prayer list. Yes, I'm taking you into the heat of the battle where, let me say it again, I should have had you in the first place. Foolish man that I am, I thought I could reason with you in public. But you, naked in the light of social media and in clear view of your toxic peers, dug in your heels, spurred on by pride to deny admitting that you might, just might, be wrong. So welcome to the real battle. Me praying for your lost soul before the God who made you. May you have neither rest nor peace, unitl you've made your peace with God.
